Update: After posting this, Laughing Panjandrum, the creator of these images, reached out to me and shared their blog link. Instead they just sit there, deprived of context, not even a diamond in the rough - a diamond in the void.īe sure to check Imminent Church Engine's page again in the future to see if they post any more of these images. But who is the author, what are their views, have they used these at the table, do they have a blog? Who knows. There's a spark of vital creativity, yet the text also has the hallmarks of someone who's well familiar with the evaluative standards that Bryce Lynch of Ten Foot Pole, for example, applies to adventure writing. The art is an aesthetic I've seen before, but not often, and not recently, outside of roguelike video-gaming. There's something so fascinating seeing something like these two dungeons. The treasure is similar, brief descriptions of the objects, followed by a price, denominated in silver. A couple monsters have special considerations, like the fact that if a Creeping Thing kills someone, it'll "begin to ravenously devour the victim, ignoring all else." Again, the writing here is brief, but I think gives you enough to work with so you're not grasping at straws. You get the number of hit dice, how they attack, and how they defend themselves. The monsters are written up in a way that's rules-light and is basically universally compatible. The monsters and treasures are all unique here. Sunlight shines through cracks in the ceiling." Hall also overgrown with lichen and flowers. "1 Entrance - Tomb door is shut but unlocked, overgrown with vines. Here's an example that really highlights the visual imagery of the writing, from the entryway to the Tomb: The Church has a lot of floral and, well, church imagery, while the Tomb is full of machines and glass. The writing here is pretty terse, but manages to pack in a lot of visual detail, and in both cases, the dungeons are fairly tightly themed. (Although by this argument, Mega Man is also a horror game, so my definition might be flawed.) ![]() Which isn't to say there aren't a number of small monsters in each dungeon, but the "boss" of each area is much more dangerous than anything else in the place. I would categorize both these adventures as "horror," since both involve exploring a creepy abandoned space, piecing together clues about what awful thing happened here in the past, and then potentially fighting a single large and extremely dangerous monster at the climax. ![]() I definitely feel an urge to try copying this visual style. I think the only way I could like it more would be if the background were dark blue instead of black. The pink numbers also look good against all those cool colors. There's more contrast, and even areas with a lot of similar-colored tiles have a bit of variation that breaks the possible monotone up nicely. Personally, I also find this one prettier. There's more treasure and a few different factions for the player characters to interact with. The second in the Tomb of King Oraine (also called the Tomb of Cursed Glass on that index page I linked to.) This one has more rooms, more interesting paths and loops, and more going on. The small square rooms on the right-hand side are also meant to be stocked using a small random table during play. In all, there's fewer rooms and less going on in here. I think it may technically be the larger of the two, though that's in part because of the large exterior space. The first is the Church of the Ailing Flower. Now, open up that killer caseback, and the real beauty of the 1954 Conquest is revealed: The Longines caliber 19AS movement. The case was available in steel, gold plate, and solid gold. The Conquest model saw countless different dial and case designs over the decades as the line continued into the 1970’s, but this first generation dial design is definitely the most iconic of the family. Later they made a version with the date window at 12, which carried over into many different Conquest models over the ensuing decades and became a signature look. Interestingly, the date window on these early Conquests were placed slightly more inwards towards the center of the dial rather than at the outer edge as is the norm. There was also a date version with the date window at 3 o’clock. There were ones with gold markers, and black dials with gold or steel markers as well. There were many different dial variations made for the Conquest line. There are dozens of example of beautifully executed dials from the 1950’s, but this dial is among the finest with its mix of textures and colors, and the use of the heavily faceted and bold steel markers combined with the fine and distinctive text script. While I can certainly sympathize with those that prefer a date and the useful functionality that goes with it, I always prefer the non-date versions as it contributes to the overall symmetry of the dial. And to top it all off, this first generation version has no date window…a thing of beauty. Plain steel dauphine hands were used and compliment the arrowhead markers. The “Automatic” and “Conquest” are printed in a distinctive script that was used by Longines for decades, and is instantly recognizable as belonging to the Longines brand. Of course, it’s signed with the ubiquitous “Swiss” below the 6 just at the bottom edge of the dial. Signed “Longines” and “Automatic” below the 12, with an applied steel Longines flying hourglass logo in between, and signed “Conquest” above the 6. There is a fine minute hash mark track just inside the silver circle. Depending on the light, this track can look either lighter or darker than the rest of the dial. There is a brushed silver circular track that runs around the dial at the level of the markers. The markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 are arrowhead shaped, while the others are slightly smaller trapezoids. It’s a matte silvery champagne color with applied faceted steel markers. While I’m a big fan of larger (40mm+/-), there’s something about the 35mm sporty dress watches of the 1950’s that sits just right on the wrist.Īs nice as the case and back are, it’s the dial that really makes this model shine. ![]() The case reference number “364” is stamped on the inside of the back, as well as the back side of the 10 o’clock lug. Many brands utilized caseback medallions, but the Longines medallions were tops in my opinion. Around the edge is engraved “Longines Automatic Waterproof”. It’s deeply engraved with a fish motif and has a spectacular deep green enamel covering. The back is topped off with a beautiful gold medallion in the center. With the help of a fellow collector, I was able to procure and example of said wrench, which is a nice additional touch (see pictures). Of course, any quality caseback wrench can be used, but Longines did make a specific tool for each size of back, like most manufacturers did. It has a thick, screw-in back with a twelve sided polygon design for the caseback tool. The caseback however, is quite different and something that set the Conquest apart from other contemporaries. Speaking of lugs, this model has beautiful beefy lugs with a nice subtle chamfer on the outer edge, again similar to the Seamasters. Similar to many of the Omega Seamasters of the era, it measures 35.2mm wide by 42.6mm long with 18mm lugs. The case is a study in simple yet rugged understatement. This Conquest was actually preceded by the All Guard, a watch that shared a similar case, movement, dial and hands. It ran from 1954 to about 1959, when a new case shape and movement were introduced. The first generation Conquest reviewed here is probably the most classic and easily recognizable iteration of the line for collectors of vintage watches. After the Conquest came the Flagship, then the Admiral and Grand Prize among others. Having a named family of watches certainly wasn’t introduced by Longines, but they definitely utilized the strategy to its fullest potential, and still use it today (as do most modern brands). Many more were to follow, but the venerable Conquest (such a killer name too…) was the beginning. The Conquest was the first step in a new development and marketing strategy with a named line or family of watches. In 1954 Longines launched the Conquest line, and with it a new era for the company. ![]() 3/24/2024 0 Comments Forgotten doors dark souls 2![]() ![]() The game's bosses include Inquisitors, bounty hunters, larger wild beasts, and large vehicles such as AT-STs. Enemy types include wild beasts native to certain planets, as well as stormtroopers, droids, and Jedi-hunting Purge Troopers. As players progress in the game, they gain skill points which can be used to upgrade their combat skills, which are divided into three major categories: Survival, Lightsaber, and Force. The usage of these Force powers is governed by the Force meter, which will replenish only when the player damages an enemy using regular attacks. The player begins the game with a "force slow" ability that slows down enemies, and slowly earns more force powers such as wall-run, double-jump, force-push, and force-pull, allowing them to reach previously inaccessible areas. The player has access to several Force powers, which are used in both combat and puzzle scenarios. ![]() The player has one lightsaber at the beginning of the game, and they can earn the ability to dual-wield a double-bladed lightsaber later in the game. The player can either sidestep, dodge, or interrupt the attack by using Force abilities. Some enemies will glow red when they attempt to launch an unblockable attack. If the player blocks just before an attack, this will parry the attack or deflect a projectile, causing their opponent's block meter to fall more quickly, opening them up for attack. Blocking an attack depletes a character's block meter, opening them up to attack when the meter hits zero. The player can use their lightsaber to strike at enemies, or block incoming attacks. It was nominated for several end-of-the-year accolades, including Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2020. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised the game's combat, characters, performance, and world design, though it received criticisms for the technical issues and lack of polish at release. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in November 2019, and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in June 2021. The music, composed by Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab, was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Choir of London. Ben Burtt provided the voice for Cal's companion droid BD-1, while Forest Whitaker reprised his role from Rogue One as Saw Gerrera. The game's voice cast includes Cameron Monaghan as Cal Kestis and Debra Wilson as his mentor Cere. The game's visuals were influenced by Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels, while the combat and levels were inspired by Metroid Prime, Dark Souls, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The game began development as an original title unrelated to Star Wars, but Electronic Arts felt the action would work well as a Star Wars game, convincing Lucasfilm to authorize and consult on the project. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was directed by Stig Asmussen, who joined Respawn in 2014. It's a very unusual art and, as far as I know, there's not a huge library of information out there to explain how to do it well, particularly as a digital artist approaching it within Zbrush, Mudbox, or any other sculpting program. Sculpting in relief was not something I ever expected or intended to get into. Good luck on your sculpting whoever you are. ![]() I would be happy to add links to further references or additional notes from anyone passing through. Update: This has consistently been my most visited page. ![]() |
